The 4 day/3 day trek starts with a meander through and down into the sacred valley; past small villages and mountain mini marts to buy the last few necessities (don't forget the tee-pee!) and stock up on coca leaves.
Day 2 takes you high up into the clouds past where trees see fit to grow through the tallest peak around.
Take er easy now, I saw a young girl pass out from the altitude and I assume a lack of good hydration. That said take a full day or two in cusco to dig the town, buy a nice wool alpaca sweater and I'm sure you'll be fine. Day 3 takes you into the jungle, through the cloud forest (not the rainforest mind you).
Day 4, after days away from civilization Machu Picchu feels like a strange Peruvian Disneyland, with bright eyed tourists lazing about - no true appreciation of the wonder of this once great people. Anyway, it well worth it.
