What started out as a dream vacation definitely finished as one as well. My group of 10 coworkers, who set off to hike the Inca Trail had trained (in varying degrees) to be able to successfully endure the long steep hike at an altitude that continued to take our breath away after every few steps. I had attempted to hire a porter after my initial booking but was unable to do so.
The first day fooled us with a steady pace and gradual grade. Then came day two. Thankfully, I was able to hire a local porter, for this day only, for a fee of 110 Soles, because the second day was straight up very steep steps for 6 of the 8 hour hike. The cooks and porters had juice waiting for us and our tents ready for napping.
Day 3 was straight down for almost 8 hours, until I could no longer keep my legs from shaking, even when standing still. However, each day was absolutely stunning with scenery and day 4 at Machu Picchu was unimaginable amidst the mountain peaks. No eye of a camera can capture its beauty among the clouds and friends that shared the adventure with you.
