Hiking the Inca Trail has been a dream since I was a child learning about the ancient Incan and Amazonian cultures.
I was not prepared for the hard terrain of the trek but I also think anything less would have been anticlimactic entering Machu Picchu. I came with my best friend and pushed myself both mentally and physically and was awarded with great local cuisine, learning of other cultures from the other hikers in our trekking group, and of course seeing the city of the Incas.
Victor, our tour guide, supported us through the hike. Not only did he teach us some words in the Quechua language and plants/culture/history of the local area, but he also helped pushed us to finish the trek each day which was long and tiresome but also beautiful and rewarding.
A big thank you to our porters and chef who carried our belongings and set up camp for us each night and cook us meals, they were the unsung heroes who helped us recuperate for the next day. If I had to do it again I would. This was the best experience of my life.
