We did the 4 nights/3 days package, and it was wonderful! Our tour guide Carlos Perez was well-versed in Inca history, Andean geography, and the local vegetation.
He was also extremely fun--what a hoot! On day one we had a mild hike up to the first base camp. The landscape was stunning. Glacial formations and snowy mountains rimmed the valley above us. At night, we were blanketed with stars. Day two was a day of arduous misery; trekking almost endlessly at high altitude. Luckily, Carlos, the cooks, and the horsemen were very accommodating.
They fed us well along the way, allowed us time to rest, and we finished the hike feeling like we conquered Everest! Day three we hiked through a completely different ecosystem: rain forest. There were canopies, waterfalls, and amazing vistas all around.
Overall, Inca Trail was a great outfitter. They were friendly, knowledgeable, a nd helped to us better understand and appreciate this beautiful country. We love Perú!!.
