The Salkantay Trek was one of the most challenging and fun adventures I´ve been on. Even if you think you may not be able to do it, you have such a great support staff between Salkantay.Org , the great guide, the amazing cook, and the friendly locals you meet along the way that they will not allow you to fail. You don´t want to fail either, because the spectacular views on the trails are breathtaking, and that is before you even make it to Machupicchu!
Enjoy the journey because it is one that you will never forget. The natural wonders, the friends, the challenge of reaching The Pass at Salkantay (bring cold gear), and ultimately Machupicchu were unforgettable. Once you reach Machupicchu, make sure to take advantage of trekking to the Sun Gate, Huayna Picchu (get tickets before), and the Inca Bridge. In the end, be prepared for an amazing and challenging time, because the journey is just as rewarding as Machupicchu.
This was both my first hiking trip and camping experience and following this, I would highly recommend the trip and the trek to others. I was happy that our guide, Edwin, tailored the experience to our abilities and interests. He was extremely knowledgeable about the trek and our surroundings and stopped several times to point out mountains, flowers, plants, and wildlife. I felt prepared at night for the camping and was happy to see that all of the equipment was in good shape. On the first cold night, Edwin offered us an extra heavy blanket to supplement our sleeping bag as well.
Arriving at Machu Picchu was awe inspiring, as expected. I had grown to respect Edwin´s advice and was happy he told us to take the bus to the mountain and save our energy for walking around the ruins and surrounding mountains. We hit all three of his favorite points, Huayna Picchu, the Inca Bridge, and the Sun Gate, and were amazed with the views and our ability to hike all three in one day. I feel Edwin prepared us well for that part of the trek.
