Salkantay Trek

The Salkantay Trek (five days, four nights) to Machu Picchu was a great experience. The view of Salkantay Mountain from the Salkantay Pass was amazing. We saw a couple avalanches off the peaks of Salkantay in the distance while we were at the pass and also did a short hike to a small lake at the pass that was very majestic. At the lookout for this lake at the pass our main guide for the day (Marco) led us in a short ritual to thank Mother Earth and that was a fun and interesting to give the trek that extra bit of authentic flare.

Advice for any new trekkers, be sure to be prepared for some cooler temperatures especially on the first night and most of the second day. This trek did seem in the end to feel like more of a trek of the Salkantay Pass than a trek to Machu Picchu but it was definitely still a worthwhile trek that I would recommend. If you're looking to feel like you've trekked to Machu Picchu I'd recommend sticking with their Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu. Another great part of the trip was of course the new friends you make when you're tossed together with a new group of people all with a common end goal. Many great memories to cherish.
