Bad news up front. This trek was a new experience for both me and my travel partner. We had not hiked seriously before and this was a challenge for us.
It took a few days to get used to the camping and daily trekking. I highly recommend breaking in your walking boots beforehand and bringing along medical supplies to tape ankles, feet, toes. The good news is that the trek is very rewarding once you complete it! The views from atop Salkantay are worth it. The guides are very knowleadgeable about the plants and animals.
You pass a breadth of climates and environments from elevated desert, grassland, and jungle. The food is excellent too!.
