My friend and I decided to take this trek as a fun way to end our student exchange school year in South America and celebrate graduation, and we were not disappointed! The landscapes and views were just incredible and we had a lot of fun hanging out with the other tour groups at the campsites and meeting people from all over the world.
The second day was the main highlight of the trek, bringing us to the high point of Salkantay Mountain at an altitude of 4,600 meters. We made it up to the top first and got to see an avalanche on the snowy side of Salkantay! After that we saw a drastic change of landscapes, going from practically Himalayas to Scottish Highlands to the Amazon Jungle in the course of two hours.
Of course, the highlight of the trek was getting to Machu Picchu right when the gates opened and spending all day hiking to Huayna and the Sun Gate and seeing absolutely everything we could! It was absolutely surreal and even though we spent almost 10 hours at the site, there was still more to do!
This was easily the best way to celebrate my friend´s graduation as well as celebtrating the end of our time here in South America!
