Only after finally arriving to Machu Picchu, and seeing it inundated with freshly showered tourists straight off the bus, did I fully appreciate the significance of the Inca Trail adventure. I got to arrive to Machu Picchu the way the Quechua did, through the mountains.
I didn't know what I was getting myself into for that second day of near vertical ascent. Watching the porters run by with even heavier packs was very humbling. However, getting to see and experience all the different ruins was totally worth the struggle with elevation and a heavy pack. It was overall a wonderful experience.
