The wake up call at 5:30 am., complete with coco tea delivered to the tent, is our first Salkantay morning. It's cold and we have a long day ahead of us. I am riding a horse up to Salkantay pass at 4600 m, my husband will climb.
The pass is like being on the moon, nothing growing, very little air and even colder. My horse goes back down and I continue down into the cloud forest. As we walk the weather warms and the terrain turns tropical. Orchids, hummingbirds, bamboo and fuchsia all around.
One day, a long day on the Salkantay Trek in Peru.
