My friends and I decided to go on the Salkantay Trek based on recommendations by friends of mine, and we were not disappointed. The trek was a once in a lifetime experience that we wouldn't have wanted to miss.

The trek was well organized, and we really felt taken care of by Joel, the guide, and the rest of the crew. Everyone operated as a family, which made all of us feel comfortable. The food was very good, and Roger and Valentin took great pleasure and pride in preparing it for us.

The trek itself was amazing - definitely challenging, but worth the sore muscles afterward. The countryside is absolutely spectacular and incredibly diverse. The vegetation and climate change constantly, from desert-like mountains to tropical, jungle-like landscapes. Joel was very knowledgeable about the plants and often stopped to give us the names. Getting to the highest point of Salkantay Pass was truly a magical experience. The vistas are incredibly beautiful, and pictures really won't do them justice. That was my favorite part of the journey, including the spirituality Joel shared with us about his culture.

Visiting the city of Machu Picchu was incredible. It is hard to imagine how this city was built in that time without modern technology – truly a wonder. The views from Huayna Picchu are worth that climb as well.

I would highly recommend this trek, but be aware that it is not a walk in the park. You will be physically challenged and want to make sure you are prepared to deal with the altitude and steep climbs. Yet you will also bond with new friends who will become like family.
