My arrival in Cusco was quite a shock as I realised the altitude was having a bigger effect on me than what I thought it would. My enthusiasm to get myself to my hotel had me miss my collection. Even though this was largely my fault, they offered to return my money that I paid for the taxi. At the hike meeting I was informed that I would be the only hiker in the group as the other 3 had not arrived. They asked if I would accept going for only 4 days and informed me clearly what I would potentially miss out on. ( glacial lake, and hot springs). They made a huge effort to ensure I felt comfortable with the change and that the free day was filled with a city tour.
The start of the hike was like many others. I was surprised at the distance we covered each day. Now was when the true professionalism of Salkantay.org came to be seen. Henry our guide, was made aware of everything I was potentially going to miss. He offered and ensured that if I was prepared to do the distance we could do it all. He was not only a good guide but an outstanding leader of the group. A true professional!
The team supporting him prepared the food and we even got tea 1st thing every morning delivered to our tents. The food was also incredible, how our chef prepared those meals with the facilities available was a testament to his ability. Lets not forget the cake! Yes a cake after summiting, incredible!
Nothing can describe the experience of Machu Picchu!
