Visiting Machu Picchu had been a lifelong dream of mine. When my wife, Stacie, and I began planning our trip, we discovered Inca Trail Reservations , and the opportunity to do more than simply visit. Instead, we could actually hike the Inca Trail !

We began our four day trek led by our guides, Gerson, the comedian, and Hilton, the quiet one.

Day one was a grind, full of beautiful scenery and lessons about historical aspects of the Inca culture. Day two brought two brutal ascents, including the conquering of Dead Womans Pass at 4,000 meters. Day three seemed like a breeze at first, but included a steep descent with approximately 3,000 steps. Day four was an early rise and short hike to Machu Picchu, including passing through the Sun Gate.

The views during the trek were absolutely breathtaking; mountains, valleys, rivers, ruins, flora and animals. The food was incredible, some of the best I have ever had. The cook kept us fueled up during breakfast, lunch and dinner, and kept us anticipating and craving our next meal.

Our guides were awesome, mixing intellingence, kindness, humor and respect. We felt safe and well informed of our surroundings and upcoming challenges.

The best part of the trek was the appreciation for the Inca culture once we arrived at Machu Picchu. Simply taking the train cannot prepare you for the marvelous ruins the way conquering the trail did. It provided a sense of accomplishment and gratification unlike anything I have ever felt.

I highly recommend this experience to everyone up to the challenge!
