We did the Salkantay trek in July 2012.
I can not express how much I enjoyed the experience. The trek itself was a little challenging, with up to 9 hours of hiking a day, with some steep climbs and descents. It´s not too bad, and the group moves at a comfortable pace. But the effort is rewarded with some of the most spectacular views and scenery I have ever seen. The group is given options on two of the days if they choose to hike a little less than originally planned. For example, on the third day, our group elected to visit some hot springs and relax our tired muscles rather than hike a few more hours.
I can not say enough about the service provided by this particular tour group. Every last detail is planned, the guide was exceptionally friendly, helpful, and made sure that we were well attended to. The support staff had our food ready and tents set up whenever we arrived at the resting points. The food was exceptional. I do not understand how they could prepare meals like the ones we were served without a full kitchen, but every meal was better than the last. There is always plenty of food and hot drinks, starting from the moment you are woken up with a hot cup of tea served at your tent.
Overall, this was the best experience of our trip this year. I highly recommend it, and I couldn´t give Salkantay.Org a higher recommendation.
