We went on the 4-day Inka trail not exactly knowing what is expected in terms of fitness and gear. The guide was well-prepared and the nightly stops were organized well. The facilities along the trail however are not necessarily equipped for the large amount of people that do the trail. There was a huge amount of good tasting food for every meal - porters and guides did a tremendous job. The stops were organized so that we walked 16 and 18 km the first two days, and then had relaxing 2 days of light walking and sightseeing for the other two days.
The best part surprisingly was arriving on the top of dead women´s pass - it felt like a great accomplishment at the time. Machu Picchu 2 days later did not feel almost as rewarding, even though the view and landscape of course were AMAZING. There are a large amount of archeological sites along the trail - the best one on the last day just an hour out of Machu Picchu in Winaywayna. Great water fountains!!. Walking through the sun gate around sunrise and seeing Machu Picchu for the first time is definitly a treat! I would recommend doing the trail to anyone who wants to visit Machu Picchu .
