What an awesome experience! Anyone can take a train to Machu Picchu but not everyone can experience it. This is a once in a lifetime experience to hike the Inca Trail with knowledgable guides who will tell you about every Inca site, plant, or anything you have questions about. It is a difficult trek, but well worth it once you climb the stairs to the Sun Gate and watch the sun illuminate the ancient city of Machu Picchu.
Day 1 in an easier hike and you get to know the people you will be experiencing Day 2 with... or without depending on your speed. Day 2 was a difficult climb up a kilometer, but well worth it when you hit camp. Day 3 was a change of scenery... from rocky terrain to jungle like vegetation. That was my favorite place to camp... above the clouds and above another awesome Inca site. Day 4 was an early morning with a steep downhill descent that wore a little on the knees but was well worth it when we hit the highlight of the trip.
The people you will meet are probably just like you... adventurous and wanting this amazing experience. We all bonded, and I was so glad to get to know all these people. After two years of dreaming about this trek and experience, I finally got to do it. As I wrote in my journal... in the end, it wasn´t about Machu Picchu. It wasn´t about the Inca Trail. It wasn´t the history or the flowers. It was the people that made an indellible mark.
