The Inca Trail is an amazing experience, and arriving at Machu Picchu at the end of it is something that you´ll never forgotten. The key to enjoying the trek is to:
a) be prepared in terms of the gear you take along, as little as possible is best, so it´s important to take only the essentials and clothing that will keep you warm.
b) Fitness is very important! Prepare yourself for it before you get to Peru, and if you have any knee issues etc, bring what you need along.
c) Give your body enough time to adjust itself to the altitude by getting to Cusco a few days before your hike starts – do not underestimate the altitude, it can make or break your experience!!
d) When you´re on the hike, take it slowly and enjoy it. One spends a lot of time looking down but it´s important to remember to look up and around at the spectacular scenery surrounding you. Machu Picchu is one of the most special places I have ever visited in all my extensive travels, and the three days leading up to getting there were full of laughter and fun. It was exciting, challenging, tiring, and breathtaking and an experience that went by way to quickly for the amount of fun and excitement involved.
