The first time I experienced Machu Picchu was seven years ago by train only. If you're thinking about visiting, I highly suggest trading the train experience, and doing the four day trek with Inca Trail Reservations . Considering this was my first multi-day trek, and at a high altitude, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it.
By the end of the first day, I fell in love with the idea of being surrounded by the natural beauty of Peru, and being led by Victor and Francisco; two very kind, proficient, knowledgeable, and passionate hikers, guides, and naturalists. Furthermore, the porters and chef were a pleasure to be around, simply because you felt the life, camaraderie, and work ethic that they have as individuals and as a whole company.
What I left most grateful for was that I experienced the Inca Trail with native Peruvians who were all a class act and supremely thankful !
