Whilst you shouldn't underestimate how difficult the hiking can be (especially for the hiking novice such as me !), the support and help of the tour guides, porters and the rest of the walkers makes it an unforgettable experience that is well worth the effort - the first view of Machu Picchu makes everything better !

Self-named Team Condor made sure nobody was left behind, with some of my fellow walkers even doubling back after they reached camp to make sure that I wasn't giving up after the second, and most strenuous day of hiking. Carlos and his team of guides were knowledgeable and informative and went above and beyond the call of duty by carrying my pack for the last stretch up to Dead Woman's Pass, when it was clear that I couldn't do it by myself. I especially liked that they did not try to hide the truth about difficult parts coming up, or how long I realistically had left to finish walking for the day (having judged my walking speed on day one - the easy day !) but just kept up the encouragement and help throughout.

The advice and support pre-hike was also invaluable and thanks should go to a great office based team as well for making sure that I was as prepared as a I could be in advance.

Important things to note: You don't need as many clothes as you think you will - everyone re-wears (but don't skimp on hiking socks and liners), hire a sleeping bag and two walking poles when you book your tour and make sure your backpack has a rain cover or buy one when you start the trek at kilometer 82. Don't be afraid to book a porter in advance unless you are an experienced hiker and take some comfy shoes to wear around the campsite post the day's walking.

If you are considering doing the trip do not search for another company but book now with Inca Trail Reservations and plan your practice hikes in advance !
