Chat on WhatsAppI arrived back in Cusco a few days ago after hiking the Salkantay and can´t stop thinking about it and wish it wasn´t over. What a magical experience! I hiked with my brother and we were fortunate enough to get placed in a group with 4 other young adventurous folks who were fun, hilarious and down to earth, plus we were joined by 2 lovely mothers with their fearless 10 year old daughters.
We all got along so well, laughed a lot and were able to share in the respect and appreciate the beauty around us. It was a pleasure to see the young girls enjoy the trip so much, especially to see how much they loved riding the horses. Their eyes were just sparkling with happiness at every twist and turn of the magnificent scenery, as were everyone´s in the group!
We all really became a family by the end of the trip, and I attribute that in a big way to our fantastic guide, David Quispe. He had a perfectly balanced way of being the leader and also being part of the family. He gave us a lot of historical facts and beliefs about the Incas and the land we were trekking on that enhanced our respect for the journey.
The food was so delicious. I couldn´t believe what a good variety our cooks created everyday out of such limited items. And the hard work to get ahead of us, set up, cook, break down! Wow! The horse guides/porters were great and worked very hard to get our luggage around safely. The camp sites were a welcome relief and felt so cozy every night.
