Three words: so. worth. it. From start to finish, this adventure was all I'd hoped it would be. (And that's saying a lot for an optimist who has had this on her bucket list for nearly a decade!).
The Inca Trail was as stunning in person as it appears in photos, and the trek was physically challenging as I'd thought it would be. I personally think the process of the journey increases the value of the experience and would recommend it, with the disclaimer that it is tough.
The second day is almost all irregular stairs, which is physically exhausting in the high altitude. Also, many parts of the trail are referred to as "Inca flat" which means up and downhill. But the feeling of completing the trek is incomparable, and anyone can do it with the right mindset. Along the way you learn the history of the Incas and see various historical sites which are impressive on their own, but they make the grandeur of Machu Picchu all the more breathtaking.
I would highly recommend Inca Trail Reservations as a trekking company! For most who choose this trip, it is an important one and the staff acknowledged that and made it so from start to finish. Our guide Juan Carlos was so informative and his passion for the history made it all the more fascinating.
Our meals prepared by Raul were even better than the restaurants we tried before the trek.
The porters were polite, efficient and an important part of our trek family. From tent-side tea to our evening meal, each day was a good experience, no matter how hard.
I'm going home happy and hoping to come back again. Fue una experiencia inolvidable.
