Holding hands, in one single chain of exhausted travelers, we slowly motioned sideways up the last ten paces of the magnificent, marathon-long Inca Trail to reach the final destination of our odyssey: the Sun Gate. Standing on top of that hill, over-viewing the prominent, lost Inca city of Machu Picchu, no words were needed to express the sense of pride and accomplishment that permeated the air that we breathed in at that privileged moment. However, although arriving at our ultimate stop was such an exhilarating experience, the whole, three days long journey, through dense forests, maleficent stairs, nastily steep hills and luscious vegetation and wildlife, was nothing but overwhelming.
This sojourn could not have been carried out as effectively, as comfortably, and as entertainingly as it was without the great people, crew and fellow trekkers, that traveled along the way. Special thanks go to the unconditioned porters, who through downfall, heat and altitude differences struggled on to maintain an outstanding service, and to the guides Paul, Martin and Marco, who were not only doing their utmost to satisfy our needs, but also detailing with such eloquence and fastidiousness the great history, culture and religion of the Inca empire. My experience with Inca Trail Reservations was truly remarkable, not only because of the general service, but because of the details.
