Thirty years ago my wife and I did the Inca Trail in circumstances that were very basic and where we under took the trail without seeing another sole. We returned this year with our two sons to take on the Salkantay trail. The Salkantay loop turned out to be an exceptional trail far exceeding the Inca Trail in beauty and in variation of terrain. We undertook the trail with a group of persons who who strangers to us but who by the end of the trail had become friends of the journey. A critical catalyst to this process was our guide Henry Chawa who possesses extra ordinary people skills as well as technical environmental knowledge which deeply reflects the culture and depth of he Incan history. Altogether this was a wonderfully fulfilling family experience and one that makes us wish to return in the near future.....hopefully within the next thirty years.
