I did the four day three night Salkantay trek with Inca Trail Reservations / Salkantay.org. Victor was our guide and he was very funny and fun to guide us along the way. Even though we had to wake up around 5 am every day to start the hike it was worth it because everyone in our group was interesting and we had great views before all the crowds arrived.
The hike is definitely challenging but if I was to do it over I would not change a thing. When we got to the top of Salkantay mountain the view of the snow capped mountain was simply incredible. We also got to see a lake on the first day that was blue-green with a snow peaked mountain right next to it. The hike downhill was also beautiful as we started to see more vegetation and forests and it got warmer.
The food was excellent throughout the hike. On the last day we went to see Machu Picchu and we were lucky to get there before all the crowds. We got great pictures and learned a lot about the Inca civilization. Excellent experience overall.
