When I signed up for the Salkantay 4 day/3 night hike, I had no idea what to expect. I did not know a lot about what Peru was like and did not have a lot of experience with hiking or camping. However, the guides that Salkantay.Org used were very knowledgeable and helpful for inexperienced hikers like me. My guide, Herbert, was very good at keeping the atmosphere light by making jokes, especially about Shakira. However, he was also good at providing information about the Peruvian life and country based on his experience whenever I or the other travelers had questions. He kept the energy of the hike up when we were tired and introduced us to many of the native plants and mountains.
My favorite moment was the moment when we reached the top of Salkantay Mountain. After hiking for hours uphill through rain, snow, and mud, it was an incredible feeling to reach the summit. I felt a kind of peace both personally and with the world. It was cathartic to know I was able to challenge myself mentally and physically. I felt like I could genuinely appreciate my surroundings. I wouldn´t have been able to do it without Salkantay.Org , out awesome guide, and my fellow travelers.
