Hiking the Inca Trail was incredible. Even without the archeological sites, it would have been the best hiking trip with the most beautiful nature I've ever seen. The archeology was really cool too; hiking the trail and seeing the waypoints along the way gives you a better perspective of Machu Picchu when you finally arrive.
I had heard that the inca trail is very crowded with other travelers, and I was apprehensive about that. However, I did not feel like the other travelers detracted from my experience.
Our group was also smaller than I expected; I thought it would be about 20 travelers. It turned out to just be our group of 3 and 3 cute girls.
Our guides English was not quite as good as I would have liked. There was some trouble in communication when asking questions about Incan civilization. Overall, she was an effective guide.
