Cultural Context

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is home to the Kogui, Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kankuamo peoples. ICANH dates the oldest homes at Teyuna to about 650 AD and the visible terraces to 1200-1600 AD, with more than 200 structures over about 33 ha. The October closures follow requests from the Kogui authorities (ICANH Resolution 0982 of 2025). ICANH asks visitors to ask before photographing people or their belongings.
