What changed
Since May 7, 2026, Cusco’s culture directorate (DDC Cusco) has let visitors buy in-person Machu Picchu tickets in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) up to three days before their visit. The extra days open only as each day sells out: tickets for the next day are sold first, then the following days. Before the change, an in-person ticket was valid only for the day after purchase.
DDC Cusco describes it as an exceptional measure for the high season, and restated it on July 26, ahead of the Fiestas Patrias holidays, citing Ministerial Resolution 285-2025-MC. No end date has been announced.
Why it changed
The measure followed long queues in Aguas Calientes, where visitors lined up for in-person tickets during the busy months.
How in-person sales work
Each day, 1,000 tickets are sold in person at the DDC Cusco ticket office in Machu Picchu Pueblo. The rest of the daily capacity, 5,600 visitors in the high season until November 2, is sold online at tuboleto.cultura.pe. The Ministry of Culture publishes real-time availability for the in-person tickets.
What it means for travelers
The change mainly helps travelers who reach Aguas Calientes without a ticket: instead of competing for the next day’s places, they may be able to secure a date two or three days out. Inca Trail trekkers are not affected, because their Machu Picchu entrance is booked with the trail permit. The measure is exceptional and could end at any time, so book online whenever you can.
