The Lares Trek offers a unique alternative to the classic Inca Trail, taking you through remote Andean villages where Quechua traditions remain unchanged for centuries. For detailed planning information, see the complete cusco travel guide.
Trail Overview
Starting from the town of Lares, this 4-day trek crosses three mountain passes above 4,000m while passing through indigenous communities known for their traditional weaving and alpaca herding. The trail ends at Ollantaytambo, from where you’ll take the train to Machu Picchu.
What to Expect
Unlike the Inca Trail, the Lares Trek focuses on cultural immersion rather than archaeological sites. You’ll encounter local families, witness traditional textile production, and enjoy natural hot springs at Lares. The scenery includes snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, and vast green valleys dotted with grazing llamas and alpacas.
Difficulty & Fitness Requirements
The Lares Trek is rated as Moderate to Challenging. The highest point reaches 4,780m at Condor Pass. Good physical fitness is required, and prior altitude acclimatization in Cusco (2-3 days) is essential. Daily hiking distances range from 10-16km over varied terrain.
Best Time to Hike
The dry season from April to October offers the best trekking conditions. May to September provides the clearest skies and most stable weather. The wet season (November to March) sees frequent afternoon rain but fewer crowds and greener landscapes.
Getting There
The trek starts approximately 3 hours north of Cusco at Lares village (3,100m). Most tours include transportation from Cusco. Explore more hiking trails in Cusco.
